I have been birding for 41 years. My favorite clients are those who are interested in birds, watching them and even learning about their behavior, not just checking birds off a life list. I enjoy people and want to have fun while birding. As a bird watcher since 1972, I have acquired a broad knowledge of birds, birdsong, habitat and behavior. One of the things I enjoy most about taking people out birding is teaching my clients how to identify birds and how to recall their song. We were in Asheville, NC for 5 years, and Bisbee, AZ 10 years before that. Currently we are house hunting in New Mexico.

Summer 2013

After a relatively busy May guiding in Southeast Arizona and birding both mountain ranges, it appears that the owl population is up. For example while birding the Chiricahuas with clients we came across a very cooperative Flammulated Owl at Rustler Park. The next day while having dinner we noticed an Elf Owl calling immediately outside of the restaurant. After dinner, after dark, we had 8 individuals calling. The largest population of Elf Owls I have encountered in downtown Portal in 15 years.

In mid July I lead the High Lonesome Bird Tours Owl Trip. We had great looks at Great Horned, Barn, Western Screech, Elf and Northern Saw Whet. We heard the Whiskered Screech Owls calling as well.
In addition to the owls we had excellent views of a Common Poorwill sitting on a T post, and a Lesser Nighthawk fly over.

Next on my agenda is the 22nd annual Southwest Wings Birding Festival next week. I will be leading three days for the festival. After that, I have a private tour lined up with three of my favorite clients.
